Sidney Nolan: Search for Paradise delves into the fascinating life and career of one of Australia’s most famous artists of the twentieth century and a central figure in the history of Heide. Sidney Nolan first met Heide founders John and Sunday Reed in 1938 and was intimately involved with them for almost a decade. For him, Heide seemed like a Garden of Eden that he later saw as a season in hell.

The essays in this lavishly illustrated 204 page hardcover publication by Heide Head Curator Kendrah Morgan, Nolan’s biographer Dr Nancy Underhill and other writers unpack this theme, exploring Nolan’s lifelong preoccupation with the notion of paradise and the consequences of its loss. The publication accompanies a major exhibition that tells the story through paintings drawn from across Nolan’s fifty year career and is presented in celebration of Heide Museum of Modern Art’s fortieth anniversary.
